Trivia: Beagles were bred as the smallest of British pack-hounds, developed to follow the scent of hare (and later rabbits) for hunters who were on foot.
They were popular for hunters who could not afford to hunt on horseback with scenthounds. At one time, however, they were popular with royalty. This led to the friendly nickname of Regal Beagle.
Beagles were sometimes called Jelly Dogs, because the hares caught during the hunt were served with a current jelly.
A Beagle puppy will have a very unique melodic bay in addition to his distinctive bark.
The baying can be quite loud and annoying to those who are not familiar with the breed. It is quite a remarkable chorus, however, when two or more Beagle dogs are together.
My grandfather had five or six Beagles that he raised for hunting. They were his rabbit dogs.
I remember them baying when my grandmother fed them every evening. As a child, I was delighted. A Beagle puppy is great around children if properly socialized.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Beagle dogs do not drool or have doggy odor. In addition, they have minimal shedding. These dogs are not generally considered hypoallergenic though, so use caution if you have allergies to dogs.
If your Beagle is smelly, check his ears. This breed is prone to ear infections when the ears get wet. Your Beagle will require minimal grooming . He will need the occasional bath and nail trim as well as regular brushing when the coat is shedding.
Beagles have only been in the United States since the late 1800s. They were registered in the AKC in 1884. Today, they are primarily companion dogs.
